On the two sides of the cycle¡K

Study Tour has become an important part of the studying programme for all undergraduates in the Department of Real Estate and Construction. This year is not an exception. Twenty-eight of us went London in England while the remained twenty-three students went Tokyo in Japan from 18 August to 28 August. As the school recommenced earlier this year, our tours started a bit earlier than past years.

The two cities we visited this year have entirely different economic situations. London enjoys its gradual growth and steps onto the most prosperous stage among these few years. On the contrast, Tokyo is still suffering from recession caused by the ¡¥bubble economy¡¦. The prices of properties of all kinds dropped for seven consecutive years, and the situation worsens by the Asian Financial Crisis. The two cities, though are on the two sides of an economic cycle, both give us a good chance for studying. London, being the origin of surveying, provides us a good chance for knowing more about the history and the nowadays development in the profession. On the other hand, the visit to Tokyo allows us to know more on the economic situation after the burst of the bubble economy. It is undoubtedly useful in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which is facing the same problem that Tokyo faced seven years ago.

We are not only benefited from the tour, but also from the preparation works for the tour. It is not an easy job to contact the firms and organizations overseas, especially Tokyo where English is not so common as in other countries. Fortunately, as a reward to our effort, our tours finished in a success. I would like to say thank you to all my colleagues, especially the chairpersons of the four sub-committees, for their hard work and support.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the generous sponsors and the organizations granting us the visit. I would also like to thank our Department Head, Mr. McKinnell, for his advice, and help and all the lecturers and staff who gave us supports and advice.
